McGregor Tourism Newsletter April 2019
The month of April always starts with April Fool’s Day. We trust that you will have a fun-filled day that will set the tone for the month ahead. Please make your way to McGregor to enjoy what we have to offer.
We had a busy month – the highlight helping to man our “Paying it Forward with Love” stall at the Robertson Wedding Fair. Mario Steve (one of our new interns) and willing helper, Sarah-Lee Coetzee, joined in the fun with Shirley and Jenny.
This month marks the 30th birthday of McGregor Primer Skool and we invite you all to celebrate with us. The school will be “Open” to the public on Friday 5th April from 11am to 1pm. Your hearts will be warmed to see the great things that are happening at present under the principal, Mrs Jonita October Philander. You will be amazed to see the new library donated by AVBOB, the new classrooms, computer room, science lab etc. The classroom tours will be followed by a few speeches and then we will join together to sing “Happy Birthday” and enjoy a slice of birthday cake!
A new support group called “Friends of McGregor Teachers and Youth Workers” has recently been formed in McGregor. The vision and mission of this group is to support Early Childhood Development, primary and secondary teachers, schools and youth workers, and enhance teaching/training capacities and abilities within the McGregor community. The objectives are
1. To provide financial and organisational support to teachers, preschool teachers and youth workers.
2. To identify opportunities within the community that will enhance broad educational and training abilities and individual growth.
3. To promote greater parental and community involvement and support for schools in McGregor and nearby farms.

Next #McGregorMagic monthly presentation is by the Curator of #KarooDesertGarden – Tuesday 9th April from 17h00 at Le Bonheur (the home of Martyn and Jenny Johnson, 60a Meul Street). Werner Voigt of #SANBI shares his knowledge about indigenous trees & long held beliefs associated with them. He is a friend of #McGregor having instated the outreach garden at the church hall opposite the Tourism Office… After his talk & updates on the #Festival, you are welcome to bring your own bottle & chat from 18h00. He is supporting the event in many other ways….
A very exciting bicycle handover event will take place at the Tourism Office on Tuesday 12th April at 11am. This event, sponsored by Cape Winelands District Municipality will be attended by dignatories representing a number of different government and municipal departments. The bikes have been donated by the Western Cape Arts and Sports and will be officially handed over by DCaS’s Minister Anroux Marais; CWDM Executive Mayor, Ald (Dr) Elna von Schlicht, and Minister Alan Winde, the MEC for Community Safety. Max Menzies will receive the bikes on behalf of The McGregor Young Warriors. An interesting fact to note regarding the bike handover of these particular 20 bikes as that the recipients will be mostly women & residents of McGregor who work at various businesses along Voortrekker Road. Mario & Mandall (our intern & bike technician) will be doing follow-up interviews in six months’ time with all new owners, to establish how the bikes have had an impact on their lives”
The end of April is the target date for 200 BMX bike handover taking place at the community centre. This will be MYW’s largest number of bikes given out in a single day. The bikes have been branded in our race team colours of blue and yellow and been shipped out to SA from China of course……….details of day to follow closer to the time.

PS Here I am on duty in the Tourism Office thanking everyone for the tops and tags that they donate for The Sweethearts Foundation. Please keep them coming! It takes 450 kg Tops = 1 standard adult wheelchair and 50 kg Tags = 1 standard adult wheelchair and our goal is to make at least one wheelchair for a McGregor resident.
