Apologies - this section of the site is being upgraded at the moment, we are adding an archive of McGregor Buildings amongst other things!
First, apologies for the late arrival of this newsletter, which was intended for distribution during the third quarter of 2011, but is now going out in the last, as the year races to a close. In this newsletter you will find news of our work on the restoration of old houses in McGregor, what is happening in terms of the Krans Nature Reserve, our engagement with the youth of McGregor and the Museum.

You may have seen our latest two Heritage Snippets about the wonderful work that this working group (Rob Leiper, Jill Hogan, Rose Kent and Betty Mitchell-Innes) are doing. The best news of all was that the Titanic Dinner raised over R10,000. A special word of thanks must go to Jill and Tiger at Green Gables who donated all the food for this event and helped make it such a success. Thank you Jill, Tiger, your family and staff! Also congratulations to all involved, particularly Betty and Rose who twisted many arms to get a full passenger list and extra donations.
We have produced a brochure (in English and Afrikaans) giving details of the project which aims to restore neglected heritage cottages in the village. Copies are available for distribution to others who may be interested in supporting this important work from Rose, Betty or at the Museum. It's an important project which should preserve the built environment which we all value and also support and build relationships with the wider community.
To date this year we have completed the re-thatching of Hannah Jansen's roof and on Saturday 15th May we will have the draw for the next house that we can tackle. Please come along and support this project – outside the Butcher in
Finally we need to raise ongoing funds if we are to reach our target this year of restoring four houses. And for this we need further donations, contacts that we can chase up for donations and of course there is the challenge from one of our members, Brenda Wintgen, which has already received some support, but needs more. Her challenge is:
“Knowing from experience how tardy well meaning people are when it comes to casual donations, I presume to suggest that ten persons in the village be approached and "touched" for an amount of R200.00, each, for a period of three months = R600.00 x 10 = R6000.00! After all, these days R200.00 is less than one spends on a meal in a restaurant, and there must surely be at least ten McGregorites who could be persuaded not to spend that amount on dining and wining once a month, for only three months? When their three months are over, another ten people can be recruited, an infinitum. To start the “Fund" going, I hereby sign a pledge to pay Heritage Restoration R200.00 per month, for a limited period of three months, starting 1 May 2010. Now all you have to do is find nine other good persons and true.”
So that’s the challenge! Will you be one of the first to respond?
In addition Dawid Esau lead several conducted walks for us over the Art Festival weekend and 50% of the proceeds from these went directly to the Restoration Project.
