HERITAGE DAY AT THE MCGREGOR PRIMARY SCHOOL |

Committee member Debbie Mosca instigated and convened this very successful event, first of its kind and a fine example of cross-cultural community participation. What was particularly pleasing was the response from those members and even non-members both with giving up time to help at the school and for financial contributions.
The objective of the occasion was twofold: to enable the pupils of McGregor Primary school to understand the concept of heritage, embracing family, possessions, buildings, our village and our trees and plants while taking part in enjoyable projects and, secondly, to contribute toward meeting the needs of the school where possible.
Committee member Rita Cadle worked with the older children who produced delightful models of village homes, along with wire cars and bakkies. Annalien van der Colff helped the younger ones depict their homes in colourful paintings. Helaine Shand encouraged pupils to tell or read their own heritage stories, in preparation for the day.
Annalien also introduced pupils to traditional songs while Corrie van der Colff focussed on modern dance to the music of his guitar and games.
Like Topsi, this was an event “which growed” as principal Danie Kraukamp, various teachers, and others – like the McGregor Musiek Opleiding Sentrum (the talented youthful band) joined the programme.
The
André Wyngaard of Mélange restaurant supplied refreshments to the visitors both on arrival and before their departure. To all who donated, attended, or helped in any way, the committee is hugely grateful.
Among the most popular projects as far as the children went were the coloring-in competition (one where everyone scored with a sought-after sticker) organised by Jenny Johnson and the cake-icing item – for which thanks to all those who supplied tray bakes.
The Breede River Gazette did us proud, covering the event over two pages and have expressed their enthusiasm for repeating the exercise, which is pleasing news.
This project proved to be a baptism of fire for Debbie Mosca as, during the preparations for the event, she encountered opposition from unexpected quarters, including, inter alia, an attempted takeover bid! Happily, charity and justice prevailed, and she and her committee are planning a bigger and better Heritage Day celebration next year, while also learning from mistakes inherent in this one.
To conclude: it does seem both logical and appropriate that Heritage Day events in McGregor are organised by the McGregor Heritage Society.
