Tanagra Guest Farm Self Catering, B&B, Historic Wine Farm, Distillery
Tanagra offers 5 units, 2 cottages (GARDEN COTTAGE and HILL COTTAGE), 2 apartments (BOTTLEBRUSH and GUMTREE) and the LOFT STUDIO. Most units are located around the old historic Tanagra homestead and the boutique wine cellar. (The Hill Cottage sits in the midst of fynbos away from everything and everybody). All units are very spacious. They have unique character and are tastefully furnished with the intention to provide a naturally elegant farm ambience. Private entrances and parking, fireplaces to warm guests in winter at a crackling fire and braai in summer, fully equipped kitchens, pool, and private verandahs all boasting scenic views.
The cottages and apartments sleep 2 persons. Accommodation is either let on a budget, self-catering basis (with servicing every 3rd day) or on a premium, B & B basis (with a sumptuous breakfast and daily servicing). Rates range from R275 to R 350 per person/night sharing for self-catering, and from R425 to R 450 per person/night sharing for B & B.
Guests can relax under the ancient wild fig tree at the old homestead, watch and listen to the birds, explore the farm (dam, vineyards, Keizer’s river, wild fynbos), go for anything between a leisurely walk on the farm to a more serious hike in the adjoining Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve, go biking (various mountain bike trails available in the vicinity), explore the quaint village of McGregor or just sit with a good book and a glass of wine and chill out on your private verandah on a lazy afternoon, or relax under the amazing Karoo stars at night.
Your hosts Anette and Robert Rosenbach will give you a warm and personal welcome and will be happy to show you the farm and introduce you to the Tanagra wines and wine cellar. Breakfast is served in the conservatory which is part of the old homestead at a long table with panoramic views on the mountains. On request a candle-light dinner (set menu) can be served in the same room with fresh and authentic country cuisine at the long table in the spirit of French table d'hôte (booking essential, minimum of 4 persons). English and German spoken.
Wine and Grappa/Eau de Vie experience at Tanagra
Tanagra is a boutique wine cellar producing hand-crafted and limited-release wines (mainly noble red wines) maturing in French oak. A recent addition to the farm is a boutique distillery, producing European style Grappa and Eau de Vie.
Guests are welcome to explore the vineyards and get personally introduced to the cellar, the distillery, the Tanagra wines and Grappas/Eau de Vies) by owners and hosts Anette and Robert. They believe that wines (and Grappa/Eau de Vie) are best tasted in leisure and in generous portions rather than in small tasters. And with food. Extended lunches under the magnificent wild fig tree at the old homestead will give guests a unique and personal wine-tasting experience. Tanagra caters set lunch menus with simple and authentic food fresh from the vegetable farm garden – in the spirit of German wine taverns. The philosophy is to provide food that easily goes with the wines in a laid-back and intimate atmosphere. Booking essential for wine-tasting with lunch (minimum of 4 persons). The hosts
Robert and Anette Rosenbach took over Tanagra in March 2009, coming all the way from Germany to make a long-held dream come true – to come and live on a farm in South Africa, and share this with others. They originally come from the Moselle area, an area with a long-standing history in wine-making. Apart from their jobs (a linguist / a business consultant) they also loved nature, space and good wine and food, and they had found all that when travelling through South Africa (since 1996). Running a wine and guest farm in South Africa seemed an alternative and challenge worth trying. In their first 8 months they restored various units (apartments and cottages) on the farm to extend it to a guest farm. At the same time they continued with the farm activities and the winery. In December 2009 they started with the production of sophisticated, European style Grappa and Eau de Vie with a potstill brought from Germany - the first distillery of this type in the valley.
