Millstone Pottery Hand Crafted Bespoke Pottery 
At our studio and showroom we are happy to demonstrate our craft and our working pottery is open to view. We are open 7 days a week and pots may be purchased directly from our showroom. Visitors are welcome to browse and enjoy the environment. Wood-firing workshops are given, using the three wood-fired kilns, to people wanting to experience this ancient and time-honoured process.
We produce a wide range of carefully hand-crafted pots using the broad spectrum of clays and firing techniques, including functional tableware, terracotta garden pots and birdfeeders, washbasins, tiles, platters and bowls, as well as large and small decorative raku dishes, cylinders and vases. We also undertake commissions.
Creative Process
We are especially committed to each and every aspect of the preparation, making and firing of our pots. The way we bring these together is our way of life, our way of being. We are mostly inspired by the potentialities of various aspects of a pottery and kiln site. We are interested in all the different firing techniques and hence make pots using both high temperature and low temperature techniques. We are especially taken by the whole process of wood-firing and have built 4 wood-firing kilns under our kiln sheds.
Events & Workshops
We hold an annual Wood-firing Jamboree (\'celebration, merry-making\'), which is going into its 7th consecutive year. This workshop is for potters, beginners, wood-firing enthusiasts and romantics alike and offers the opportunity of having work fired in a wood-fired kiln. Workshops are given by prominent South African potters during this 3-day event. We also give raku workshops to groups as well as giving talks and demonstrations.
We have been making pots together since 1996 and relocated from Johannesburg to McGregor that year. We have lived here ever since, on the \'road to nowhere\'. Paul has a formal ceramics background, including a diploma from the Wits Tech in Ceramic Design and a 3-year apprenticeship with Kim Sacks. Nina has a more academic background with an MA degree in Industrial Sociology from Wits University. She also conducts research from time to time. We have 2 children - Sarah, 12, and Joshua, 3. We find living in the country and selling our work direct from our studio brings many challenges and is not always the idealic, stress-free lifestyle our visitors romaticise it to be.
