ONVERWACHT FLORA ACCOMMODATION is situated high in the Riviersonderend mountains halfway between the twin villages of McGregor and Greyton. The property is surrounded by the mountain peaks of the Langeberge and Galgeberg and is proudly owned by Japie and Sandra Oosthuizen.
This nature lovers paradise in the is situated at the start of the famous BOESMANSKLOOF HIKING TRAIL (permit needed) and those who wish to do so can hike the 16km to Greyton or otherwise you can take our own private hiking trails at ONVERWACHT with mountain streams, waterfalls and natural rock pools. You do not need a permit to hike on ONVERWACHT.
Onverwacht Flora is an ideal getaway for nature lovers, week-enders, hikers and mountain bikers. Of course you could relax and listen to the dawn chorus, the singing of the sugarbirds or the rumbling of the distant river rock pools.
The lights of the nearby villages of the R62 (the world’s longest wine route) and the Overberg are a picturesque view by day and night.
Onverwacht Flora overlooks the Gobos River with many refreshing rock pools to choose from for having lots of fun!
Make time to hike by following the directions starting from the Gobos River or the nearby marked foot-path.
Take your time to experience the unique floral wealth on our property. Our farm specializes in a variety of Fynbos.
The mysterious 'Galg Road' is a fascinating piece of history to discover when you visit us.
Every viewpoint is a destination on its own. The sunset in the west and the sunrise in the east is ever changing, a daily delight!
Choose a destination and follow the foot-paths to 'connect with the universe' and spend some special time there. Just maybe it’s your lucky day and your eye catches a few wild buck!
Let the peace and the silence soak into your soul here. The real world is far, far away in these God-given places!
All the bungalows are named after famous fynbos species - the pride of Onverwacht:
•Blushing Bride (Stone cottage): Sleeps two guests in a double bed;
•Speldekussing (Annex): Sleeps two guests;
•Compacta (Annex): Sleeps eight guests;
•Erica (Mountain cottage): Sleeps eight guests;
•Sewejaartjie (Mountain cottage): Sleeps eight guests;
•Repens (Mountain cottage): Sleeps eight guests;
•Exemia (Mountain cottage): Sleeps eight guests.
Onverwacht can accommodate 38 guests in total.
Facilities/Services:
•All units are self-catering;
•They all have an indoor shower and toilet;
•All units are fully equipped with crockery, cutlery and cookware;
•There is no electricty, but a generator can be arranged for groups;
•All units have a two plate gas stove and gas geysers;
•Oil lamps and candles are provided;
•Guests must please bring their own bedlinen and towels (linen and towels may be provided on request at an extra cost);
•All units have their own private braai (barbeque) facilities; and Fireplaces inside units.
Tarriffs:
•R100 per person/night;
•Children under 12: R50.00 per person/night;
•The tarriff for larger groups are negotiable.
Firewood is available, but must please be ordered upon arrival.
Bedding is available at R50.00 for a double and R30.00 per person for
a single bed. Meals may be ordered on request - please arrange this
with the hostess upon arrival. Groceries for hikers can be purchased
by the hostess upon arrival. The cost is 15% of the total value of
the groceries purchased. Please arrange this upon arrival.
Things to do:
•Mountain biking: Bikers can challenge themselves on these roads with a variety of options to choose from;
•Private hiking trails: There are many trails, such as the Heide trail, waiting to be discovered. Please take the time to make use of them;
•Refreshing water pools: The amazing 'Bobbejaankop' waterhole is situated only 1km from the bungalows;
•Picnics: Picnics at the pools are very popular - one can easily spend the whole day just relaxing;
•Viewpoints: There are simply too many to mention!!!
•Birdlife: Onverwacht boasts some spectacular birdlife - these include suikerbekkies, eagles, crows, sunbirds and owls;
•Animals: These include klipspringer, grysbok and duikers. (Please do not frighten or chase the animals as some are very tame);
•Fynbos: Fynbos species at Onverwacht include erica, speldekussing, leucodendron, repens and compacta. The fynbos changes with the seasons - this is the pride of Onverwacht!!!
•Waterkloof 4X4 Trail Route and Hiking Trail: This is perfect spot to enjoy a picnic, fishing or swimming in the river pools. The route starts approximately 2km on the main road below the bungalows and travels towards the valley/kloof approximately 2km downwards. Your
hosts will be more than happy to show guests a few private 4X4 trails. Some of these are quite challenging.
