Pieter Holloway, manager and pioneer of this community project, established a woodwork business and training centre on a very small scale first as part of a vision to give practical training through hands on experience, with the aim of supplementing this experience with course work. This to counteract the huge number of young unemployed people in the area.
The vision of The Breede Centre is to cultivate self-reliant, empowered individuals, capable of using their practical skills and personal initiative to act in the world with confidence.
In practice this means setting up a variety of small social enterprises through which to provide training and sell products to financially support the operating of the Centre. Graduates will be encouraged to become entrepreneurs and start their own small home industry.
The woodwork social enterprise is set up and makes a variety of wooden toys, custom made cupboards, etc. A formal course for 10 students is to start early 2016.
The screen printing social enterprise provides work for an number of locals. A formal sewing course is envisioned to start in 2016.
The cooking enterprise will be housed in a soon to fitted out professional kitchen. A formal cooking course will be started after the social enterprise has been established.
Besides these longer courses, a range of shorter courses are offered: entrepreneurship, computer, conversational Afrikaans and English, etc.
Out of concern that the village children have very little opportunity to develop in arts and crafts, the afternoon and holiday programs were started now providing constructive learning and enjoyment for up to 30 children daily and 80 children during the holidays. Storytelling, games, sports, arts, singing and various craft and handwork techniques are integral parts of the programs.
